Do Hurricanes Really Cause Earthquakes?

Many people believe that Hurricanes can cause Earthquakes. Some say that is absurd however if you consider the tidal storm surges and the water weight movements of the ocean you can see why this is so. Recently this subject came up in an online think tank and one guest member asked;

Can Hurricane tidal storm surges cause Earthquakes too? Did the Big Category V Cyclone and the other Cyclones in Australia cause the massive Tonga Quake?

So you bring up a very relevant question indeed and the answer to your question about the major 8.1 Tonga Quake and the several seven plus after shocks and many 5-6 still expected could be indeed it may have been a factor? Also realize the massive Cyclone Monica a few weeks back which tracked through the Indian Ocean and "T-boned" Darwin Australia, as it pressed down on one plate due to storm surge making movement and then that movement may have triggered stress, which was relieved 1000's of miles away where the Tonga Quake occurred.

Also realize the Peru, Chilian quakes of 7.0 and 6.0 a few weeks ago. Everything is inter-related along the ring of fire and Earthquakes waves can travel 170 degrees along the globe. If you draw a line from all those events you may find that they are all within the 170 degrees. Plus we know there is expected stress and future events in the Indian Ocean which will affect the ring of fire Pacific Ocean areas too. Push-pull affect. Plate Tectonics are indeed interesting to study and so are Hurricanes, Typhoons, Cyclone, Tsunamis and Earthquakes. And indeed they are somewhat interrelated. Consider this in 2006.
