Nature Functional Food- Simple Facts About Colostrum

With colostrum growing in popularity, we have a responsibility to educate and inform the public about the important facts to consider about this remarkable substance. Especially, how colostrum works.

Colostrum supports the human organism in two main ways. First, its multiple immune factors and natural antibiotics provide strong support for the immune system. Second, its many growth factors offer a broad spectrum boost to the organism to encourage optimum health and healing.

Immune Factors

Immunoglobulins

IgG - Enhances phagocytosis to neutralize toxins (80-85% of total antibody serum).

IgA - Protects mucosal surfaces (about 15%).

IgM - Enhances phagocytosis, especially against microorganisms (5-10%).

IgD - Stimulates B-cells to produce antibodies (.2%).

IgE - Associated with allergic reactions (.002%).

Colostrum contains antibodies and other components that act against E-Coli 0157:H7 and 0111:NM, Salmonella, Rotavirus, Coronavirus, and is effective against most other bacteria and viruses.

Immunoglobulins (found in colostrum) are able to neutralize the most harmful bacteria, viruses, and yeasts.
Dr. Per Brandtzaeg; Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences

Human clinical study: Immune factors in cow colostrum, when taken orally, are effective against disease-causing organisms in the intestinal tract. Ingestion of bovine colostrum's immunoglobulins may be a new method of providing passive immunoprotection against a host of gut-associated disease causing antigens (viral and bacterial).

Dr. R. McClead, et. al.; Pediatrics Research

Lactoferrin: An iron-binding protein with antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, lactoferrin has been shown in numerous research studies to be a potent, broad-spectrum natural antibiotic and antiviral agent. In a recent study, lactoferrin proved to be a powerful inhibitor of the HIV-1 virus. It also contains antibodies against a wide range of bacterial, fungal and protazoal pathogens. As well, lactoferrin is a potent antioxidant that inhibits the harmful effects of free radicals.

Proline-rich Polypeptide (PRP): This hormone regulates the thymus gland and helps boost an underactive immune system. The thymus produces the vital T-cells that fight viruses and antigens. The PRP found in colostrum also helps balance the overactive immune system usually present in autoimmune diseases where the body actually attacks itself.

Growth Factors

They are compounds whose primary effects are to promote healing by building, maintaining, and repairing bone, muscle, nerves, and cartilage; to stimulate fat metabolism; to regulate protein metabolism during fasting; to maintain balanced blood sugar levels; to help regulate the brain chemicals that control mood; and to promote wound healing. A "bonus" effect of growth factors appears to be their anti-aging benefits, some of which include reduction of wrinkles and tighter, younger-looking skin.

Scientists have identified the following growth factors in bovine colostrum, epithelial growth factor (EGF), fibroblast growth factors (FGF), insulin-like growth factors I and II (IGF-I, IGF-II), and transforming growth factors (TGF A & B).

The growth fraction contains factors which are vital to the newborn to ensure cell growth and proper factors, particularly IGF-l and TGF-B, extend to nearly all structural cells of the body. They enhance DNA and protein synthesis and, by effecting repair to the intestinal walls, can significantly improve nutrients uptake. These growth factors improve our ability to regenerate and repair body cells, particularly in muscle and cartilage.
